Description
PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack bundles Dwarf Fortress with huge community upgrades - graphics, tools, bugfixes, and much more.

It's suitable for anyone - if you've never tried DF before, or played for years. For beginners, everything is bundled and set up for you; any setting can be safely ignored and the default will just work. For advanced players, everything is open: customise, add, remove, update, or replace anything you want to. The Starter Pack means you can spend hours setting up your fortress, instead of your DF install!

There's a thread on the Bay12 forums for feedback, questions, suggestions, or anything else about the pack. The second post has a complete table of contents, and recent changelogs.

Besides the official download page on DFFD (here!), /u/Hecknar maintains df.wicked-code.com, which mirrors every release since 0.40.01! The final 34.11 pack is here. The final 40.24 pack is here. The final 32-bit pack, 0.43.09-r09, is here. If you need an older pack or that site is down, let me know and we'll sort something out. OSX and Linux packs are available at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/Lazy_Newb_Pack

INSTRUCTIONS:
It's a bundle of portable apps; there's no further installation procedure.
The pack must be able to read/write files though - so don't put it in a "Program Files" folder.
2. [Optional]: Use this tool and the checksum on DFFD to confirm you got an uncorrupted file.
3. [Optional]: Upgrade from an earlier release by copying your old 'Dwarf Fortress 0.xx.yy/data/save/' folder to the new pack.
DO NOT try to upgrade by extracting or copying over an earlier pack.
4. [Optional]: Visit the DF wiki or my tutorials for help learning to play.

Finally, an appeal: Dwarf Fortress is free, and redistributable, because Toady lives off donations. You can support Bay12 Games here. Or you can donate to cover my time and costs here. Even if you decide not to donate, Dwarf Fortress is still free - and so is this unofficial pack.

I am able to launch DF from Dwarf Fortress directory within. Just not the Start Pack launcher.

I am also getting this error.
Windows 10 Pro
Tried in my documents and on desktop.
Dwarf Fortress Launches on its own, and the DFHack launches with it if launched via the LNP directory df launcher.

Hey folks,

I was able to replicate this error by trying to run Starter Pack Launcher (PyLNP).exe without first extracting it from its .zip folder. The Pack is intended to be uncompressed before running, and has always done very odd things when run while compressed. Try it out on the desktop first, there's no traditional installer, so it's best not to run it in system folders.
I've only been trying it uncompressed though, and tried on Desktop. Still gives me the same error. I can't even find 'launcher.py' in the files and the stderr.txt file is just a redirect to stderr.log. Couldn't you just rewrite the problem file with 'chown user:admin problem.file'?

UPDATE: I just launched it FROM the .ZIP (compressed) and it launched. WTH?
UPDATE 2: I was able to get it to work by not putting the folder into Documents\MyGames\DwarfFortress and instead, just going up one folder. C:\\Users\MyName\ and plop it right there. How that makes sense idk.

Dear Abbey (of the LNP),

I have been using the LNP extensively and am very happy with all the help it has given in getting me into enjoying DF, but there is a small tweak that would be nice to add to it. Would it be a terribly large project to add a dark mode to the LNP launcher? I have been looking into the github repository and didnt see any cfg or yaml files that would control that. It seems that it would just need to be recompiled with a different color scheme applied to the gui. I would just try that myself but I don't have the skillset for it. Obviously, this isn't a super high priority thing, but would be nice to have.

Thanks

I'm getting a virus hit on the DwarfMockup-1.2.0.exe too.
Hopefully just another false positive.

For reference, VirusTotal results for DwarfMockup:
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/6e126556a8560f36d7883d42bb3607b24b733e321cb35f70fe3238956c2e59ea
I notice the community score is 64 votes for safe, 0 for unsafe.

It's also been around for quite some time at the current version, with some false positives with specific antivirus software being cleared, and detection popping up on others. And no reports of it actually doing anything malicious whatsoever.

So, same answer as always, slightly updated:

Antivirus software often sees this sort of behavior as suspicious, and even after they fix or whitelist the false positive, it tends to eventually show back up. Also, other tools like DwarfMockup sometimes do something that is viewed as suspicious by antivirus software (not all that uncommon for hobby software) and causes these false positives as well.
Most antivirus software has a way on their website or via e-mail to report false positives, feel free to do that for whatever antivirus software you are using. And if somehow it isn't a false positive, they will let you know.

When I was unzipping the file (it ends up being 559 MB, 567 MB on disk) I got a warning from McAffee saying a virus tried to "attack" me:

Anyone know what this JTI suspect stuff refers to? Won't let me copy the text so I took a screenshot.

Is the Dwarf-Mockup EXE file important for using this?

It's a false positive, it's come and gone from the virus checker lists for years, no one's ever had a problem with it.

If you're concerned about it, removing it is fine, it doesn't affect anything else or actually link to Dwarf Fortress in any way. It's a neat but unessential utility. It lets you lay out fortress areas in a graphics format and save them in the old quickfort format. There are other tools included in DFhack that can perform nearly the same function.

The author is actually back in the community, so maybe we can get a version that doesn't upset virus checkers, which don't agree on what's wrong with it, incidentally. Apparently it's a script and some graphics libraries wrapped up in an .exe shell.

The last three comments here above yours are all on this same topic, and multiple other times further up, incidentally.
Hi, I downloaded, extracted latest starter pack associated with 47.05 to Documents folder on Window. When i click Dwarf Fortress app or use the launcher, DF starts up, but I don't get any option to "Continue Playing" so I can follow the tutorial. It's as if it's not seeing the saved game presumably saved for the tutorial. Tried various combinations in the launcher.

It DID work with the earlier 40.24 starter pack, but I understand that's an obsolete version? Or is the tutorial only set up to work with that version?

thanks! hb

Hello there!

"PeridexisErrant's Walkthrough" (http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11171) and "PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack (64bit)" (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=7622) are indeed different projects by the same author. The tutorial only works with "PeridexisErrant's Walkthrough" which as you note is an earlier version, whereas "PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack (64bit)" is usually the most complete and up to date Pack.

Heyas,

Just wanted to report receiving the same error trying to run 'Starter Pack Launcher (PyLNP).exe' after extracting all files to my desktop (C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\DwarfFortress\)

Have not yet been able to resolve the issue. Did verify the checksum before running, here is the error again for clarity:

Update: I was able to resolve the above error by copying over an older version of the LNP, then extracting this into the same folder.

It appears once the stderr.txt file is present, and doesn't need to be created, the error no longer appears.

Edit: I notice that the error in question also references "stder.txt", not stderr.txt?

Hey, I have a different issue whereby none of the utility programs and the dwarf fortress launcher would work from the Starter Pack Launcher.
I did the checksum and I ran it as administrator however, I am still unable to run the program from within the launcher.

Is this as intended or did I messed up somewhere?
(There is no error, double clicking any of the program simply doesn't launch it for some reason)

I used a fresh install of the LNP without any prior version on Windows 10.
