Description
PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack bundles Dwarf Fortress with huge community upgrades - graphics, tools, bugfixes, and much more.

It's suitable for anyone - if you've never tried DF before, or played for years. For beginners, everything is bundled and set up for you; any setting can be safely ignored and the default will just work. For advanced players, everything is open: customise, add, remove, update, or replace anything you want to. The Starter Pack means you can spend hours setting up your fortress, instead of your DF install!

There's a thread on the Bay12 forums for feedback, questions, suggestions, or anything else about the pack. The second post has a complete table of contents, and recent changelogs.

Besides the official download page on DFFD (here!), /u/Hecknar maintains df.wicked-code.com, which mirrors every release since 0.40.01! The final 34.11 pack is here. The final 40.24 pack is here. The final 32-bit pack, 0.43.09-r09, is here. If you need an older pack or that site is down, let me know and we'll sort something out. OSX and Linux packs are available at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/Lazy_Newb_Pack

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download (above) and unzip the folder
It's a bundle of portable apps; there's no further installation procedure.
The pack must be able to read/write files though - so don't put it in a "Program Files" folder.
2. [Optional]: Use this tool and the checksum on DFFD to confirm you got an uncorrupted file.
3. [Optional]: Upgrade from an earlier release by copying your old 'Dwarf Fortress 0.xx.yy/data/save/' folder to the new pack.
DO NOT try to upgrade by extracting or copying over an earlier pack.
4. [Optional]: Visit the DF wiki or my tutorials for help learning to play.

Finally, an appeal: Dwarf Fortress is free, and redistributable, because Toady lives off donations. You can support Bay12 Games here. Or you can donate to cover my time and costs here. Even if you decide not to donate, Dwarf Fortress is still free - and so is this unofficial pack.

Hi is there plans for making a 43.05 version? Or does this current version work with 43.05?
This version doesn't support 43.05, because several important tools are not updated yet - the simultaneous change to a new compiler and 64-bit broke a lot of things!

Of course I will update as soon as DFHack and TwbT support 43.05, and move to 64bit as soon as Therapist supports that (it added 32bit support for 43.05 earlier today). You can see the status of all these components (updated hourly) here: http://peridexiserrant.neocities.org/starter-pack.log.txt

The link you're referring to is the page you are currently on, the file listing. The download link is in the upper left and says "Download Now"; it works as you'd expect and downloads the file.

OFFS! If I were blind I'd have an excuse for continually not seeing that! Dagnabitry! Thank you for the slap.

Hello everyone!
I've just downloaded this pack and I have some troubles with SoundSense. When I'm trying to run it from launcher it just crashes. When I run exe directly, it starts normally, but when I try to update sound packs it throws java.net.ConnectException and nothing happens. Did anyone face the same issue?

I'm running Win7, java version 1.8.0_111

I could be easily mistaken since I'm not familiar with these tools and their filename patterns, but a cursory read and typical filename convention suggests that the version of Dwarf Therapist included is now for 64bit; if so that's progress. DFHack's filename suggests it still doesn't support 0.43.05 yet, and I have no clue about TwbT or even what it does (though, assuming age means days since last updated, I'd say it's being worked on as of at least 13 days ago).

DFHack doesn't fully support 0.43.05, but a rather stable (from my personal experience) beta version is available, so a beta version of the LNP could be created and updated for those of us who like to cut ourselves on the bleeding edge.

As for what TWBT does, its a rather fundamental DFHack plugin that works to change how tiles are displayed. Default graphics packs are limited because the same tiles are used for text as are for the environment. Fancy tiles make text illegible. TWBT, among many other awesome things, uses DFHack magic to replace text with text, giving diversity of tiles.

 PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack (v 0.43.05-r04) -> Engraving  » posted by ElPolloDiablo on May 18, 2017, 12:40:29 pm
Anybody else getting random garbage when engraving vs. what it used to look like?

Using the Phoebus graphics pack I just get random letters and tiles -- wells, ropes, dwarves etc.

I'll second the same problem with DFHack activation.
DFHack is off and can not be turned on, and other bits that depend on it like TwbT are disabled.

I have Just gone here to DFHack's Github at the bottom the current downloads are listed. I pulled the one for my systems and dropped it in the *\PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack 0.43.05-r04\Dwarf Fortress 0.43.05 folder and it is working once i reopen LNP.

I just downloaded the new version for my new Windows 10 machine, and the Starter Pack Launcher won't open at all. I get a 'working' cursor, a warning that Windows doesn't trust you (obv. I click "run anyway") and then... nothing. Tried 'run as system administrator' and get the same thing -- nada.

The included version of DF works just fine, so it seems it's just the launcher. I'll bug Pidgeot, too, since I'm not sure which of you might have the answer.

I know I can use the pack components the old fashioned way, but I'm becoming lazy in my old age. Really appreciate all the work you put into the pack.

Update: Went to Pidgeot's thread and downloaded the console version, and that starts fine. In case anyone else has the same issue.

Same, except I don't get the "warning that Windows doesn't trust you."

Update:

After using PyLNP downloaded on it's own, I was able to get the launcher to run. Then it wouldn't let me turn DFHack on in the launcher, which I was able to get around by downloading DFHack separately, copying it into the proper place in the starter pack, and restarting the launcher (from the PyLNP file again, not the pack's version).

...now I STILL can't play, and I get an error stating that data/art/mouse.png is missing. This error persists regardless of whether mouse functionality is turned on. All the people i can find discussing that error are running linux, so at that point my work-arounds hit a dead end.

I'll post this rundown on the forums, too -- hopefully it'll be helpful to others, and PeridexisErrant or one of the other marvelous contributors will have an answer.

In the meantime I'm playing Rimworld and wishing they were dwarves. Dwarves don't all go to sleep at night. Dwarves know that's just laziness!
