The features of this mod are already part of Advanced Agriculture. This is a version for the vanilla plants.

This mod adds the ability to plant trees. Real trees, not shrubs named after trees that can only be farmed in crop plots. This mod is compatible with all modded civilizations (entities).

To plant a tree, place the custom workshop "Prepared Ground" where you want the trunk of the tree to be. Then select the reaction for the type of tree you want to plant. Once the reaction is complete, the workshop will be replaced with a sapling of that tree species.

The workshop cannot be placed on ground that will not support tree growth. If you wish to plant trees on stone, it cannot be smoothed and it must first be muddied just like for setting up farm plots. When the workshop is completed it will remove the mud on the tile underneath it; this is not a problem, the mud will be replaced when the tree is planted.

Trees which have obtainable seeds are planted from those seeds. Trees which do not have obtainable seeds (mostly conifers and underground trees) instead use a log as the planting item. The reaction for planting a specific tree will indicate what material is needed to plant that species of tree.

Note that saplings take three years to grow into trees, and can die if they are walked over frequently. It may be a good idea to build walls around orchards with doors that are locked once the saplings have been planted until they grow into trees.
