Description
This module adds the Kappa creature and entity, water-loving semi-reptilians whose notable feature is giving birth to many polymorphs, with small and large quadrupeds and humanoids from two turtle-like morphologies. They are somewhat violent and have little regard for the lives of other sapients yet don’t have the same love as goblins for utter discord. Description Kappa are an unusual assortment of creatures. Naturalists have attempted to categorise the various creatures that call themselves kappa and no one report matches another’s work. Some have four legs, many more have two. Many are stocky with webbed feet, others are much taller and sprint quickly over marshy ground. Some are enormous, some are moderate and others can be mistaken for a common turtle, if not for the man-like faces they stare back with. Only a few conclusions can be drawn - All accounts report an ability to breathe in water and air, and all kappa possess a shell like a turtle, though what the shell is made of yet still conflicts across accounts. Attempts to make meaningful contact with kappa communities have been somewhat fruitless. They are not outwardly hostile, but visitors and delegations are usually met with uncouth behaviour, and their entertainment is typically humiliating and violent, often at the expense of the visiting party. Whether or not these are simply elven insensibilites is yet to be seen, though indignant retaliatory strikes usually end with armies marching into the swampland never to be seen again. Gameplay Kappa mostly exist to be an experiment in mixed castes of creatures who both serve as entity members and livestock. Kappa have a variety of morphs that serve all the purposes that domestic animals would, minus providing wool. Kappa will be your primary trading partner in marshy embarks where humans dare not venture. They will bring products made from their brethren, which it is up to you what moral quandary you want to have over that. They may also bring them in cages, which if you manage to snag a breeding pair may produce kappa citizens for you. Maybe. I haven’t seen it in action yet. Kappa tend to create problems in worldgen. If you end up fighting them, expect trouble from the hulking specimens. Inspiration Kappa are a Japanese turtle folk, which this depiction stays rather faithful to. They live near water, are kind of awful to humans but can be befriended, and love a good wrestling match. However, this depiction of quadrupedal kappa inspired a few more ideas, reminding me of the furstocks of Elder Scrolls Khajiit. Ultimately the kappa ended up resembling a merger of both the beastfolk from that series, taking some inspiration from the different quadruped Khajiit forms and a few of the different forms of the Argonian tribes. Oh, and Pokemon in some cases, albeit unconsciously. |
