DT's main problem is that it's version-dependent. And it won't show history without loading a backed up save in DF, while spreadsheets allow to load, look up and try "what-if" changes at will. Also, the format with both bonuses and maluses is handy for wide variety of things, like choice of cross-training.
Besides, DF is about self-picked challenges more than most games, and a player may consider usage of internal data not normally displayed "cheating".
