This modification is designed for DF Premium v53.10. Support for other versions is not guaranteed. This does seem to work for Classic! Unzip into \DF\data\vanilla\HEWN and activate as normal.

HEWN is a Graphics Pack inspired by Traditional Roguelikes, Caves of Qud, and Dwarf Fortress Classic Graphics Sets. HEWN overhauls the UI and *ALL* creatures, plants, buildings, and environment sprites, and is designed for Fortress Mode. Adventure Mode UI and specific features are not currently supported as of Version 1.0. This is a TOTAL CONVERSION designed to give a classic, retro feel.

HEWN comes with a custom colors.txt and black_background.bmp file that are strongly recommended to be installed manually using the instructions below. Installing these files allows you to experience HEWN as intended, and your experience will be worse without them.

> All Fortress Mode UI elements, plants, environment tiles, liquids, 'particle effects', creatures, buildings, and items, have new graphics in this classic retro style.

> All creatures fit in 1 tile, and can differentiated by color and silhouette.

> Unique profession sprites for the 5 main races:

Children, babies, corpses, ghosts, and undead are all represented by unqiue sprites.

Miners, Woodworkers, Stoneworkers, Rangers, Farmers, Fishers, Smiths, Jewelers, Craftsworkers, Engineers, and Merchants, have unique sprites or coloration.

Standard and Master sprites for major weapon classes: Swords, Axes, Hammers, Maces, Bows, Crossbows, Pikes, Spears, Blowguns, Whips

Profession sprites for some nobles likely to come in a future update.

> Stones color-coded by magma/fire-safety and resource. White stones are NOT safe, Grey stones are fire safe, Dark Grey stones are magma safe. Ores of copper, iron, tin, silver, etc., are color coded as well.

Install Instructions:

Unzip HEWN into your DF data > Installed Mods folder.

In-game, place HEWN below all Vanilla files in your mod load order. Deactivate:

In order to maintain a consistent visual style, HEWN contains some duplicate references to Vanilla objects, and handles some tiles in a different way than Vanilla, so deactivation of certain Vanilla assets is currently requeired.

*Please note*: Deactivating Vanilla assets may prevent saves from being playable on newer versions. Ideally, future versions of HEWN will be playable and complete without deactivating any Vanilla assets.

Technically optional, though HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for intended experience:

> Move black_background.bmp from CHECK ME folder to ...\Dwarf Fortress\data\art
> Move colors.txt from CHECK ME folder to ...\Dwarf Fortress\data\init

You can either back up these files manually or redownload Dwarf Fortress to restore Vanilla files.
