A zombie water buffalo killed all of my adult dwarves, but left a single child (and a human maceman guest) alive. The fort was not considered dead, so I let it run until something happen. What happened was migrants. The migrants managed to kill the zombie, reviving my fort. However, I haven't been able to appoint any new nobles, including a new militia commander, because my expedition leader has not yet been replaced.
