Description
THIS IS AN OUTDATED VERSION OF THE STARTER PACK

Stable and fully-featured, it is based on DF2014 (version 0.40.24) and includes the products of over a year of work by the community.

However, it was made obsolete by the release of Dwarf Fortress version 0.42; the main Starter Pack has continued to update while this version of the pack was moved to a seperate download page for archival. The current Starter Pack can be found here, and is considerably more advanced.

Unless you have a specific interest in playing an older version of Dwarf Fortress, I strongly encourage you to download the newer pack linked above. This pack is no longer supported, and will never be updated. The old pack description, table of contents, and partial changelog follows.

====================================

PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack bundles Dwarf Fortress with huge community upgrades - graphics, tools, bugfixes, and much more.

Download the latest Starter Pack here!

It's suitable for anyone - if you've never tried DF before, or played for years. For beginners, everything is bundled and set up for you; any setting can be safely ignored and the default will just work. For advanced players, everything is open: customise, add, remove, update, or replace anything you want to. The Starter Pack means you can spend hours setting up your fortress, instead of your DF install!

There's a thread on the Bay12 forums for feedback, questions, suggestions, or anything else about the pack. The second post has a complete table of contents, and recent changelogs.

Besides the official download page on DFFD, /u/Hecknar maintains df.wicked-code.com, which mirrors every release since 0.40.01! The final 34.11 pack is here. The final 40.24 pack is here. If you need an older pack or that site is down, let me know and we'll sort something out. OSX and Linux packs are available at http://lazynewbpack.com

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download and unzip the folder
It's a bundle of portable apps; there's no further installation procedure.
The pack must be able to read/write files though - so don't put it in a "Program Files" folder.
2. [Optional]: Use this tool and the checksum on DFFD to confirm you got an uncorrupted file.
3. [Optional]: Upgrade from an earlier release by running the 'copy my data' script with both versions next to each other in a folder.
DO NOT try to upgrade by extracting or copying over an earlier pack.
4. [Optional]: Visit the DF wiki or my tutorials for help learning to play.

Finally, an appeal: Dwarf Fortress is free, and redistributable, because Toady lives off donations. You can support Bay12 Games here. Or you can donate to cover my time and costs here. Even if you decide not to donate, Dwarf Fortress is still free - and so is this unofficial pack.

Not sure who exactly controls the content of theses files, but LNP/keybinds/Laptop with mouse.txt has the same entry for

[BIND:D_ONESTEP:REPEAT_NOT]
[KEY:/]

Listed twice, line 23 and line 41.

And in the hover text for the Obsidian graphics pack. It should say "at its best", not "at it's best"

Edit: Also noticed that he Graphics packs list says "Phoebus 16x" instead of "Phoebus 16px"

Sorry for the nitpicks, but the pack is working great for me!

When I try to open the launcher, I am accosted by terrible vermin in the form of 2 pop up messages. The first states "The procedure entry point ucrtbase.terminate could not be located in the dynamic link library api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll." Then the second immediately after; "Fatal Error! Error loading Python DLL: C:/Users/User/AppData/Local/Temp/_MEI40042/python35.DLL (error code 127)." I don't think it's a problem with my specific computer (though it seems other people haven't had this problem) because I have downloaded many different versions of DF LNP and never encountered this problem. What can I do (if anything) to make it work correctly (or to work at all even)?

Other users were reporting that it contains malware, so I scanned the launcher itself using VirusTotal. It does indeed contain malware--specifically "Win.Trojan.Agent-953878" and "HEUR/QVM18.1.Malware.Gen". I took a screenshot of the results:

WTF Peredexis! What sort of treachery is this?? Idk either an honest mistake or a f@ggot a$$ DF player hater who is jealous cuz too stupid to understand the game. doofba, or anyone, what sort of virus is this? I already downloaded this file and played it for several days now, what sort of harm will this do to my computer? I have no internet on my computer, been using my phone for internet, will this make a difference?

It's a false positive - you can see that 51 of the 53 virus scanners think the file is fine; only two are so oversensitive that they see things that aren't there.

Before you start throwing insults around - and calling me "a f@ggot a$$ DF player hater who is jealous cuz too stupid to understand the game" is wrong on all counts but still offensive - perhaps you should wait for an answer as to what this report means, or learn to read it for yourself?

More generally: if you don't trust me not to accidentally or deliberately include malware, DON'T DOWNLOAD AND RUN MY SOFTWARE. That's just common sense...

JC dude I said honest mistake *or* etc. etc. any who I already downloaded it, too stuck on it to delete it. We shall see if malicious or not. Furthermore, why would there be a false positive on this LNP and no other I *ever* downloaded? I do not comprehend this.

Welcome to the world of jerks where you're accused of distributing malware because some random crappy security software flagged it. False positives happen all the time. This is why they offer 'EXCLUSIONS' to their products and I'm sure one of the reasons virustotal lists so many results. False positives is a sign of _poor quality_ not good quality! And many of them flag anything that isn't used by 100s of people by default, meaning anything just released is subject to harassment by these security products.

Instead of scare mongering and throwing accusations around at people working their butts off making stuff for you to use, a simple friendly heads up to the author I think would've been appreciated.

I actually did not test with an old savefile but decided to start over. So the error might exist with the old save still. Good luck! If you find a solution please post here :)

I guarantee you if PeridexisErrant is capable of putting this pack together, he is capable of setting up a push notification on when new versions of DF come out.

Requests like this only fatigue and frustrate the author.

If you want to contribute and make the author's life easier, a well phrased compliment and making a donation to Bay12 or LNP would help everyone involved, including this community.

^ this. Also, there's nothing for me to update yet - you can just go download DF. The pack has to wait for graphics updates, memory research for Therapist and DFHack, and so on. It'll be ready when it's ready...
