Yes, the mismatched tiles are to be expected with a vanilla save in Spacefox.
I still suspect your save is from 42.03, what you describe usually happens with modded games, or when Toady changes a lot, like between .03 -04.

Try the manual update method I proposed above. Get Spacefox-42.03 version, unzip it, and overwrite the files (NOT the folder!!) in save/regionx/raws/objects, and the save/regionx/raws/graphics folder. Copy this prepared save into Macnewbie, install graphics in the launcher, but say no to update saves.

Was your save generated with 42.04, or some other previous version? The instruction will only work with 42.04, as a lot of save breaking raw changes were added with this version. With an older save your only viable import option is to manually update your save raws to use your preferred graphics:

I think the crash is related to Truetype fonts, try disabling them ingame with F12, or by switching Print Mode to STANDARD in the graphics tab of the launcher.

1, Mount the .dmg file by double-clicking.
2, Drag and drop the Macnewbie folder to your Applications.
3, Start the Macnewbie launcher to customize and launch DF.

X11 is not needed anymore, since freetype support library is included, neither is Wine, because everything is native OSX. You either use the launcher to start the game, or a terminal window to run the either ./df or ./df-vanilla, neither of which is an XQuartz file.
You haven't told me which system you have, but it should work on 10.6-10.10, I recommend using at least 10.7.

This still breaks any 40.05+ saves due to the obsolete language files, (YOR vs. YORE) and will prevent any migrants from arriving (no strict pop cap). Plus there are other important/less important changes too.
I went ahead and merged the 40.09 raw updates into 1.32, you can grab the fix from here.

Looks interesting, but the raws look like v.40.01. This will break saves, and contains a lot of bugs fixed since.
